If you are starting out, one possible approach (there are many others) has been described by Fr. William Meninger, who writes:‘Sit quietly. Take a moment to relax. Your eyes should be closed and your head held at a comfortable angle. Concentrate on your breathing. Say a brief prayer in your own words expressing your love for God. Choose a word, or brief phrase, to chase away distraction and bring your focus back to loving prayer.Next, calmly, peacefully and lovingly, listen with the ears of your heart to your chosen prayer word as you allow it silently to repeat itself. Do not whisper it or say it out loud, or even use your tongue or lips. Realise that by this word you are expressing your love for God. Whenever distractions come, simply go back to your prayer word. Go boldly forward into this prayer and make it your own.(From: The Loving Search for God)
